Reception Perception Based Media Appearances
By: Matt Harmon
Here I'll post all radio shows or podcasts that I go on to primarily talk about Reception Perception, and the wide receiver position in advance of the release of the first annual Reception Perception Project. The appearances will go in descending order from newest to oldest. If you wish to have me on your show to talk Reception Perception, please contact me via email: [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your support of the project.
The Rummy and Ray Fantasy Football Podcast - May 27th, 2015
It's always a treat to join analysts who I really enjoy following, and respect, on their podcasts. I recently had an opportunity to do just that with a spot on the new and famous, Rummy and Ray Fantasy Football Podcast. The guys had me on to discuss many of the incredible second year wide receivers, their Reception Perception data, and how we are all feeling about their fantasy value for the coming season. Some highlights include disagreements between Ray and I on Mike Evans and Martavis Bryant, why I am completely avoiding Sammy Watkins, and a positive but different from the consensus' breakdown on Jordan Matthews. This is a group of players who will play a big factor in making or breaking fantasy drafts this year. Picking the right sophomore receivers to invest in at high prices will go a long way in determining who takes home league championships. I feel Reception Perception will be a big assistance in making those decisions, and discussed how it can be used as such on the show.
Rumford Johnny and Ray Summerlin are two of the very best in the industry, and were awesome to kick ideas back and forth with on their podcast. Not only are they informative, and challenged some of my ideas, but they are also two really fun guys. Seriously, where else will you find a show with Maya Angelou references, and multiple player comparisons involving an "industrial accident"? Only on the Rummy and Ray Show. Make sure to subscribe to their program on iTunes, so you can catch every episode, as I do.

The Fantasy Football Helpers' Treatment Podcast - May 7th, 2015
A few months back, I joined George Banko on his podcast to discuss Reception Perception, and how Amari Cooper graded out as a prospect. Here in May, we revisited our takes on Cooper now that he is a Raider, and how the rest of the class shook out. Here was George's write up from the show:
"On Thursday's episode of the Treatment podcast, Reception Perception creator Matt Harmon stops by to talk about rookie wide receivers and which rookie wideouts in particular have the best potential for 2015. He also talks about certain qualities he looks for in good receivers, how mentality plays a role and how he feels about some of the younger wideouts in the league such as Odell Beckham Jr. and Allen Robinson. We wrap things up with Harmon's lukewarm feelings on the mexican food chain known as Chipotle."
Great talking with George, as always. Start of the show with some good wide receiver discussion, and end with a little Chipotle heat. Sounds like the makings of a great episode.

Fake Pigskin Dynasty Podcast - May 5th, 2015
With the draft now in the rearview mirror, it's important to spend a little time digesting all the potential fantasy prospects' landing spots. To do so, the crew at the Fake Pigskin Dynasty Podcast brought me in to dissect nearly every skill position player selected in the 2015 NFL Draft. This show is a mammoth, at nearly two hours long, but it is well worth your time. Richard, Ron and myself espoused plenty of long form and detailed analysis, while mixing in a good bit of mirth. Make sure you are following both Ron and Richard, to keep up with all their future podcasts. Listen to this episode here.
Fantasy Football Auction Podcast - April 22nd, 2015
One of the real underrated blessings about furthering the Reception Perception methodology throughout public circles is how many new, and interesting people in the industry I've been able to come in contact with through podcast invites. One such group is the three illustrious men behind FantasyFootballAuction.com. Going by the nicknames Uncle Buckets, Slim and Blistr, these three guys are attempting to corner the market on the exciting format of the auction draft with their website, and I've enjoyed looking over their work since getting in touch with them. On the episode of this podcast, the guys had me on to go over Reception Perception, and dig into how some receivers who switched teams graded out in the methodology. From Mike Wallace to Kenny Stills, Michael Crabtree to Percy Harvin; we covered plenty of players. We also went off the trail to hit on a few draft prospects as well.
This was a fun recording for me, and I really appreciated the enthusiasm the men at FFAuction had for the information Reception Perception has to offer. Make sure you listen to this episode, and keep up with FFAuction of Twitter.

The RSP Filmroom - April 17th, 2015
It is no secret that that Matt Waldman is among the writers/analysts that I look up to, and respect, the most. As such, it's an honor and a treat when I get to join him in the illustrious RSP Film Room to break down some wide receivers. In my first visit, Waldman and I compared, contrasted and juxtaposed the games of DeVante Parker and Devante Davis (one of our mutual favorites). For the second appearance, he suggested that we take down Devin Smith, and naturally I couldn't resist. Something else that is not a secret, is my affinity for Devin Smith after writing him up for Reception Perception. Some notes Waldman made on the show:
As a bonus, Waldman and I go off script at the end of the show into a discussion on Sammy Watkins, the Reception Perception article I wrote about him in January, and our mutual concerns for a player we were both once so high on. It was refreshing to have a real, nuanced discussion on that subject, rather than a testy Twitter war.
As mentioned, I admire Matt Waldman's writing, scouting work, and personality to the highest degree. Talking football with him is a true pleasure, and a reminder of how fun and fruitful being a part of this community is. And what a joy it was to do so on Devin Smith, one of my favorite prospects from this draft class. I cannot wait to return to the RSP Film Room for a third visit, already planned for a player we both have strong affinity for.
- Fluid, integrated processing that Smith, Maxx Williams, and other projected starters display.
- Why underneath routes are so important to the vertical game.
- Why YAC on underneath routes impact a defender’s coverage depth and ultimately the vertical game.
- Devin Smith’s ridiculous performance history on go routes, and how Reception Perception quantified that.
- What is horizontal separation and how does it aid the receiver and quarterback in the vertical passing game?
- The “late hands” concept: What it is and why it’s important.
- The important of hand position pre-catch on fade or 50/50 routes in tight coverage.

The Draft Rap Podcast presented by eDraft - April 16th, 2015
One of the radio hosts I have been looking forward to hooking up with for a good while is Luke Inman from eDraft sports. We had some misses, but Inman, co-host Matt Johnson and myself were finally able to get the timing right to chat some Reception Perception and this year's wide receiver group. Just in time for the release of my wide receiver prospect rankings, we went in-depth on some of where I differ from the mainstream thoughts. We started off with a little Nelson Agholor love, because we know I cannot help myself there, but we also hit on why I am concerned about some aspects of DeVante Parker and Tyler Lockett. There was also a brilliant discussion Luke brought up, regarding the difference between the small receiver, big receiver game, and the relative value to each. I gave my opinion on which I prefer to see out of receiver I am scouting, but how a true balance of the skills can lead to greatness.
I always enjoy talking to guys like Luke Inman and Matt Johnson on Twitter, and this was a really fun podcast appearance. Jump to the 30 minute mark of the show to hear my segment on Reception Perception, and the current crop of wide receiver prospects.

Mile High Sports Radio - April 13th, 2015
Twice is always nice, or at least that was my thought when Ben Allbright invited me back on his Denver radio show. This time, I knew he had a desired angle. Allbright noticed the Demaryius Thomas Reception Perception charts I sent out on Twitter, to start a discussion, and wondered if my numbers would support his premise that the Broncos should not retain Thomas for top dollar. In my segment (linked below), I went deep on what some of the Reception Perception data means for Demaryius Thomas, and how we should view him as a player. We certainly hit on the idea of context with these stats, as well as a little Cody Latimer talk. I also gave a few snippets in regards to my wide receiver draft prospect rankings, and laid out some of my goals with Reception Perception, and where it is headed.
As always, thanks so much to Ben and Joe Morgan for having me on their Mile High Sports radio show. It was nice to be able to air some of my complicated thoughts on Thomas to the larger Denver audience, and it helped me solidify my own opinion on him as a player. I have a feeling I'll be back, again, on this program at some point soon.

The Fantasy Goodfellas Podcast - April 11th, 2015
A good stretch of audio touring for Reception Perception this week concluded with a visit to the Fantasy Goodfellas Podcast presented by Blindside Football. I made an in-season appearance on this show a few months back, and have since developed a good relationship with the hosts, Justin and Armando. Now that we are in the offseason, and there is no daily fantasy pricing to discuss, the voices behind this Draft Kings heavy show sought me out to discuss Reception Perception and big name NFL wide receivers. With all the talk about the upcoming NFL Draft, it was nice to get some thoughts off my chest about the pro players I've been charting. We started off with some heavy Demaryius Thomas talk, who is on my mind after finishing his sample. How does he compare to other top-10 fantasy receivers? I also shared some Odell Beckham Jr. data, and other 2014 rookies. The guys also gave me a chance to present which receiver scores the best in Reception Perception, so far, and who my biggest 2015 sleeper for fantasy leagues is.
Justin and Armando are both great guys, who worked with me when schedules got complicated to bring me on the show. I am enjoying the relationship developing between the Fantasy Goodfellas Podcast and myself. This show is definitely worth your time, and after you listen to my appearance, make sure you subscribe to the program on iTunes.

Fake Pigskin's Angle of Pursuit Podcast - April 9th, 2015
In a busy week for Reception Perception, I followed up my morning radio hit with a more extended visit with the guys from FakePigskin.com. Kyle and Dennis host the Angle of Pursuit Podcast, and have brought on a long list of illustrious guests lately. I was happy to be invited on for an appearance, as well. Here, we basically run down just about every wide receiver prospect on the radar. We hit the top guys like Dorial Green-Beckham and Kevin White. However, the real value is where we go deep on prospects like DeAndre Smelter and Darius Davis, as potential studs that can be had super late. There's plenty of agreement and debate to go through here, as well as another healthy Jaelen Strong discussion. Man, I feel like I talk about that guy three times a week at this point.
It was a good time talking wide receivers with Dennis and Kyle, and I feel like we covered the prospects at the position with a wide brush. I'd imagine some listeners will learn a thing or two they did know about prospects, or maybe a new name all together, before taking this show in. Make sure to follow along with the Angles of Pursuit Podcast to keep up with future episodes, and certainly listen to this one at your convenience.

WFNZ The Fan 610 AM in Charlotte - April 8th, 2015
After writing and doing film work for Black and Blue Review during the 2014 regular season, I've made a ton of great connections to fellow analysts, fans and readers dedicated to the Carolina Panthers. The guys from the morning show on WFNZ out of Charlotte is one such example. I was a guest on the Mac Attack program during the season to talk Carolina specifics, so this was my second visit. This time, the crew had their eyes on running through some wide receiver prospects that I've studied recently (some for Reception Perception), with an emphasis on who may fit the Panthers. We didn't spend much time on top guys, like Kevin White or Amari Cooper, as both will only don the black and blue in the dreams of the fans. Instead, Chris and Jim had me hit on the players I liked that will more likely be available at the 25th pick in the first round. Obviously, that led to me espousing more love for Devin Smith, who I do happen to think is a missing piece type of player for the Panthers. I also hit on why Nelson Agholor would be a good fit for the team, and why I'd prefer to see him over Jaelen Strong as Carolina's first pick. We also hit on guys I'd like to see in Panther colors later on, such as Tre McBride, Justin Hardy or Devante Davis.
I was very grateful that Travis, the producer of the Mac Attack, extended an invitation for a return visit. It's always a pleasure to talk Carolina ball with Chris McClain, and you can tell why their program is so highly regarded in the Charlotte area. Their efforts to help spread the Reception Perception message are most appreciated, even if Chris did invoke a different Harmon's name before I came on the show. Of course, I hope to make many more appearances with WFNZ for great shows such as this one.

The Faked Goods Fantasy Football Podcast - March 27,2015
The Fake Football is one of the more reputable brands in the fantasy football industry, and their podcast is one of the better dynasty resources around. With free agency quieting, and the draft inching ever closer, there is no better time to talk dynasty fantasy football. As such, I was very pleased when venerable duo of Rich Hribar and Chad Scott reached out to me to hop on The Faked Goods podcast with them to do just that. The guys had me lay out everything to do with Reception Perception, and even gave me a chance to harken back to the original posts from last summer. Eventually, we got into the meat of the discussion, where we broke down the top-10 of our respective wide receiver prospect rankings. Those rankings can be found through the link to the podcast page. Rich and I disagreed on Jaelen Strong's projection, and Chad proved to be an outlier with his Devin Funchess stance (at least until Rich and I talked him down). There was plenty of intelligent dissension, and good discussion of the differences in our lists. We also gave plenty of love to underrated names like DeAndre Smelter, Devante Davis and Kenny Bell. In between it all, there was an enjoyable amount of mirth, a few "can't help myself" sort of rants by me, and oddly, more than one reference to my father.
I hope the listeners of The Fake Goods podcast enjoy the conversation as much as I did. I left the show feeling a better understanding of some of these wide receiver prospects. Rich and Chad do an excellent job with the program, and I was very grateful to be the first guest of 2015. Make sure you follow both of their analysis on Twitter, and subscribe to their show on iTunes. I look forward to joining the show in the future for another great episode like this one.

The Fantasy Coach Podcast - March 6, 2015
I've done a few traditional radio hits lately, and while I certainly enjoy those, it felt good to be back on a podcast and able to talk long-form about Reception Perception. This time, another analysts that I've gotten to know, and even play in some fantasy leagues against, invited me on to their show to talk about the project. Coach Dennis Esser runs a fantastic show, and I had a great time going back and forth in a very free-lowing conversation. Honestly, there isn't much Dennis and I didn't cover when it comes to the wide receiver landscape around the league, and we even went on a great tangent about player comparisons in scouting. We went over the draft prospects I've written about, including some in-depth analysis of Devin Smith, and his pro translation, in light of the recent article I posted. Dennis also posed some questions on a few of the free agents to be, including Michael Crabtree, Torrey Smith and Jeremy Maclin, and whether they're better off moving on or staying put. I also ranked veteran receivers who were rumored to be cut or traded (Brandon Marshall, Andre Johnson and Dwayne Bowe) by who still has the most to offer their next team. Naturally, we covered the origins of Reception Perception, while discussing the upcoming book publication, and all the information those interested in the project will need.
I really enjoyed working with Dennis, both in setting the show up and during out actual over hour long conversation. It's clear that Dennis knows his stuff, which should be no surprise given his background in coaching. I'm so thankful he brought me on, and provided such a free form structure to talk Reception Perception. I'd encourage you all to listen to our show below, follow Dennis' website and subscribe to The Fantasy Coach program on iTunes.

Mile High Sports Radio - February 26, 2015
If you've spent some time combing through DraftTwitter, you're familiar with it's appointed villain, Ben Allbright. Despite the persona he's created, and the army of trolls that want to fight him on a seemingly daily basis, the truth of the matter is Ben is a really good guy, and an excellent talent evaluator. So, I was honored when he reached out to have me on his Denver based radio show to talk about Reception Perception. Ben, and his radio partner Joe Morgan, asked plenty of great questions with some interesting conclusions. I talked with the guys about how the tool can be used to evaluate draft prospects, and some of the things I've seen with prospects. Joe also posed a question about whether the data changes on a player to player basis based on how they are used by their team. That's a fascinating point of discussion that I've noticed when charting for Reception Perception, most of the statistics do not seem to fluctuate much when you add more games to the sample. Which, in my mind validates the tool as an accurate assessment of a wide receiver's game.
Fast paced radio style interviews are a new challenge for me, and I appreciate Ben Allbright for having me on and the kind words he shared about Reception Perception, at the risk of sacrificing his darker Twitter persona. Listen or download my segment of the show below.

UK Endzone's MDDF Podcast - February 22, 2015
Reception Perception and I took a trip across the pond to talk about some wide receivers with Neil Dutton and Paul Mainwaring of UKEndZone.com. Neil and Paul were interested in hearing about the methodology, and some of the players I've watched recently. We talked Michael Crabtree, and why he can thrive in a new landing spot, as well as a little about some of the players I scouted in the Mountain West Conference this year, such as Jay Ajayi and Devante Davis. The guys also gave me a platform to talk about the Panthers, and specifically what I expect to see from Kelvin Benjamin going forward. However, the part of the podcast I enjoyed most was when Neil asked me why I believe some athletic receivers, like Tavon Austin and Cordarrelle Patterson have struggled to find NFL success. This leads to a fascinating discussion on baseline traits that a players needs as a technician, and how athleticism helps reach players unlock immense potential, but they need to coincide. Go ahead and listen to, so you can join my inner debate on this subject.
I'm very thankful to Neil for a gracious invitation to spread Reception Perception to a whole new geographic audience. I look forward to rejoining him to talk about the series on the MDDF Podcast in the future.

The Dynasty Dudez Hangout - February 18, 2015
Two guys I have interacted with since I broke into the fantasy industry, I knew that Nathan Powell and Russell Clay were experts in frivolity on their weekly Dynasty Dudez hangout. They feature a weekly theme, and as a well-known dog lover, the guys had (my gorgeous pup) Charlie and I on for the "Dog Edition". You'll notice right off the bat, Russell went all out for the show by painting his face to mimic a dog--complete with a strikingly realistic hanging tongue. Truly, it is the stuff of nightmares. If you can get past Russell's face decor (I barely could without laughing), you'll find this show is full of great nuggets about the wide receiver position. We dished on Dorial Green-Beckham and Amari Cooper, but this is the first show I've explained my strong feelings of optimism towards Ohio State's Devin Smith. I touched on Michael Crabtree and why I am so optimistic about his future, in light of his impending departure from San Francisco. Russell and Nathan are experts in the dynasty game, and provided a ton of excellent information; when we were not distracted by a certain painted face.
As you tell from watching the program, Nathan and Russell are two fun individuals who happen to be astute fantasy football analysts. I am very grateful to them for having me on the show, and am looking forward to return visits to the Dynasty Dudez Hangout.

The Fantasy Football Helpers' Treatment Podcast - February 13, 2015
George Banko of Fantasy Football Helpers reached out to me, and asked me to join him for a great back and forth on the wide receiver position. George let me espouse for a good while on exactly what Reception Perception is, and how I use it to evaluate the receiver position. We took a dive into the fantasy side of the series, and how it can help owners in need of receiver help. Also, we hit on Reception Perception as a scouting tool, and we covered Amari Cooper from every angle. If you want an audio breakdown of the piece I wrote on Cooper, this is the place to go.
I was unfamiliar with George and the work from his site before this show, but I've bookmarked him and FF Helpers now. I really appreciate him for hosting me.

The KP Show - February 12, 2015
Kyle Posey, of SB Nation's Bolts from the Blue Chargers Blog, was kind enough to have me on the revitalization episode of his podcast. We went over the origins of Reception Perception, and the whole story. about what it is we look for in the position, what traits do and don't translate from college to the NFL, and tie that into what traits possessed by some of the prospects. We also make some educated guesses on how well players will perform at the combine, and just how significant is the combine for the wide receivers. This was one of the best conversations I've had on a podcast, and best of all, Kyle is a former collegiate wide receiver himself, so his analysis is much more valuable than mine.
As one of my favorite analysts to follow on Twitter, it was no surprise I enjoyed talking shop with Kyle Posey as much as I did. Many thanks to him for having me.

The DLF Dynasty Podcast - January 21, 2015
It was my pleasure to join DLF's Karl Safchick and Eric Hardter to give a brief overview of what Reception Perception is all about. We went in-depth on the excellent top-three rookies wideouts from the 2014 class, Odell Beckham Jr., Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans. Additionally, we touched on some of this year's college prospects. Including, Amari Cooper and Dorial Green-Beckham.
Thanks to Karl, and the DLF Podcast team, for the invitation.
