It was just over three years ago that I made a life-changing decision. My plan was to pursue a doctoral program to continue research on the social theory work I began as an undergraduate at Lynchburg College. Life had other plans, and after navigating my ship through some rocky waters in my first year out of school, I altered my course. I scrapped the plans.
I wanted to be an NFL writer. I wanted to make covering football my job. With no idea whether that wild dream would ever come to fruition, I nevertheless gave chase.
I’ve spent the last two football seasons working at NFL Media as a writer, podcaster and somehow, someway, even found myself on T.V. a few times. The dream came true, in bigger and better ways with faster pace than I ever could have possibly imagined.
Beside the help of a tremendous amount of supporters, friends and mentors along the way, the biggest boost to my career as a football writer was the popularity of Reception Perception. In an effort to stand out at the onset of my journey, I developed the wide receiver charting series to study the position in a way no one else was doing. The series was a hit among those who followed me at the time, and it’s continued growth never ceases to amaze and humble me, as Reception Perception found it’s way to outlets like Footballguys, The Washington Post and beyond.
No matter what I accomplish at NFL Network, Reception Perception will always be my base, the center of what I do in this business.
With that said, despite the great traction the series gets here at Backyard Banter and various other outlets, I felt this offseason that it was time for Reception Perception to take another step and find a true home where it could continue to grow. This week, that wish was fulfilled.
I’m pleased to announce that I’ve agreed to a deal with the owners of The Fantasy Footballers to make Reception Perception an exclusive piece of content to their operation. Mike Wright, Andy Holloway and Jason Moore are three of the best people I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know in the media industry and I am thrilled to work with them in growing the outreach of Reception Perception to the mutual benefit of all parties involved. I’m hopeful that what comes out of joining forces this offseason will result in a lasting and longterm relationship.
By partnering with The Fantasy Footballers, I believe that Reception Perception will not only gain stability as a series but also a reach new set of readers while giving out more content and data on a wider berth of players than in any of the previous three years of the series’ existence. This move was made with the reader right in the forefront of priority. By partnering with The Fantasy Footballers, I’ll be able to produce a higher volume of content and in a more clear and organized fashion than I ever possibly could have on my own.
With that in mind, lets get down to business and lay out what you can expect from the series this offseason.
I’m excited for this next, and what is sure to be the best, chapter in Reception Perception history. With more data and information available to the public than ever before, it’s sure to be a wild ride leading up to the 2017 NFL season. Thank you to each and every one of you who has made Reception Perception what it is today and a special hand of gratitude to those who will continue to support the series in this new venture.
Hope to see you on that ride,
Matt

- Full Reception Perception data and written evaluations on at least 15 NFL Draft wide receiver prospects in a free series of articles prior to the college selection process in May.
- Full Reception Perception data and written evaluations on The Fantasy Footballers Top-50 ranked wide receivers for the 2017 NFL season with the purchase of their Ultimate Draft Kit this year.
- Releasing data on 50 NFL players is an unprecedented development in Reception Perception history, as it more than doubles the number of players featured in the last two offseason combined
- With the partnership between Reception Perception and The Fantasy Footballers the route tree and other presentation graphics will be revamped, giving the user more pleasing and easier ways to consume the content.
